Hirudotherapy (medicinal leeches)
Hirudotherapy (medicinal leeches)
Hirudotherapy is a therapeutic practice that uses medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) for the localised treatment of certain conditions in animals. During feeding, leeches secrete saliva containing bioactive compounds such as hirudin, hyaluronidase, and various enzymes that inhibit blood clotting, stimulate local circulation, and reduce inflammation. In dogs and cats, the method is explored for chronic joint inflammation, circulatory disorders, and some dermatological conditions. The procedure is carried out by a trained veterinarian or veterinary therapist using certified medicinal leeches. The animal is monitored throughout the session; general anaesthesia is not typically required. Owners should expect a short, non-invasive procedure that usually needs to be repeated across several sessions to achieve a noticeable effect.
