Western herbal medicine (phytotherapy)
Western herbal medicine, or phytotherapy, uses medicinal plants from the European and North American traditions to support animal health. A trained veterinarian or certified herbalist selects plant-based preparations – such as extracts, tinctures, teas, or capsules – tailored to the individual animal and its condition. The approach is commonly used for chronic conditions including gastrointestinal disorders, skin diseases, anxiety, and as a supportive therapy during recovery. Efficacy is attributed to phytochemical compounds with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, or adaptogenic properties. Owners should expect a thorough medical history review, as certain plants are unsuitable for specific species, breeds, or animals with pre-existing conditions. Herbal medicine is most often used alongside conventional veterinary treatment rather than as a standalone therapy.
